Sceptre 24inch LCD

Sceptre x24wg-Naga LCDMost of the time when you think about LCD monitors companies like: Samsung, Acer, LG and Viewsonic come to mind. Often times however, these monitors are extremely expensive, so what do you do when you want a large monitor for less?

The Sceptre X24WG 24″ Widescreen LCD is your answer. This monitor has a low refresh rate, high resolution and color constrast all packaged into a 24″ frame. The best part about this monitor is that you can find it for as low as $300, which is a steal for a 24″ monitor.

Here are a few of the technical specifications for the Sceptre X24WG:

  • Street price: $299.99 approx.
  • Aspect Ratio: 16:9 Wide Screen
  • Brightness: 300 cd/m2
  • Contrast ratio: 4000:1
  • Resolution: 1920 x 1200
  • Response Time: 2 ms

Sceptre x24wg sideThings I like
The thing I like about this monitor is that so many things are included for such a low price. 2ms response time and a 4000:1 constrast ratio are really high for normal standards, and especially high when you take into account that this monitor is $50-$100 cheaper than the next 24 LCD.

I also like the fact that they pack both a VGA and a DVI cable into the package. Other than those two things I really couldn’t find anything else I liked. The monitor has good specifications but I found when I took it out of the box that I wasn’t that impressed.

Things I don’t like
The major problem I had with this monitor is that I received two dead monitors right out of the box. Sure, you could say that I just have bad luck, and if I had gotten one DOA, I would have agreed.

I think the build quality of this monitor is very poor. The stand feels very flimsy and it can only tilt a little bit backwards, but it can’t tilt forwards. I also didn’t like the onboard speakers. While I’m not an audio junky, I do listen to a fair amount of music and the sound quality that came out of the speakers is absolute garbage. I couldn’t listen to them for that long.

Overall I’m not impressed with this monitor. While the price is low, the build quality is just as low and this monitor is not worth it.

Pros:

  • Good specifications (on paper)
  • Cheap

Cons:

  • Two dead monitors right out of the box
  • Poor build quality
  • Sound quality is bad

Final Thoughts
I might have just had bad luck with this monitor but in my opinion it is not worth the lower price tag. The build quality is low and you can find much better monitors on the market. I strongly suggest that you stay away from this monitor.

I just purchased this monitor about a month ago, and I think that it is a fantastic monitor for the money. Getting DOA monitors is very unusual (at least from the viewpoint of newegg’s reviews) and there is an optional wall mount that can be purchased with this monitor, which would satisfy the less-than-accommodating stand that it comes with. Drivers for vista are still unavailable. that is my only negative comment about this monitor

I never intended to use the speakers when I bought this LCD, so I honestly can’t say what they sound like. I do love the picture quality, and the latest and greatest games look so much better at 1900×1200 in 16:9 compared to my old 19″ LCD. I think this is definitely a good deal, the finish on the LCD is great, the picture quality is really good, and the price was unbeatable.
