Use Your Mobile Camera As A Webcam
Ever thought that you could use your mobile camera also as your computer webcam? It is easier than setting up a standalone webcam on your PC. All it requires is installing a software on your mobile and on your PC! But this works only for Symbian mobile phone , Windows Mobile phones and RIM Blackberry.
There are quite a few softwares that do the job but I will talk about only one here that does the job quite efficiently.
The software I am talking about is Mobiola Webcam, which is not a freeware but can be purchased for $20. So is it worth spending the extra bucks on it? According to me yes and no. If you already own a webcam then there is little reason for you to purchase this. But if you don’t own one then it a great way to add webcam functionality to your PC. Also it ensures that you can use enable any PC with webcam functionality by just installing the software on the PC.
Some of the main functions of the software are :
- Transforms your mobile phone into high-quality PC webcam.
- Works as a mobile webcam using USB or Bluetooth connectivity.
- Screen Capture functionality, when device screen can be demonstrated on PC real-time.
- Works with Skype, Yahoo, YouTube, MSN, AOL IM, ICQ and many others.
The application consists of two parts, a client application that resides on the phone and and a webcam server application that is installed on your PC that processes the images sent by the phone. You can also tinker with contrast, image quality, compression rate and other settings.
So how to set the application up? It is a piece of cake and you hardly need to do anything, you need to install the client application on the phone and the webcam server application on the PC. Then you can connect your mobile to PC by either USB cable or via Bluetooth and launch the application. Fire up your favourite chat client with video conferencing functionality and start using your mobile camera as a webcam!

Sorry there is no Java application which can convert your mobile camera to webcam.

I have clearly mentioned in the post that the software is only compatible with Symbian 60 phones. So if you have a JAVA phone, you will not be able to use the mobile camera as a webcam.

Dear all,
Mobiola Lite allows the webcam app for non-symbian mobile phones. You can try it for 7 days. I’m trying it now on my W880i. But you have to be savvy on windoze Bluetooth & com ports. Very good video quality (works with my skype and MSN), but very poor FPS (0.3 average) Does anyone KNOW how to have better FPS? Preferably without flash update, if I can avoid it (I don’t have setool, phonexs, far…). Does anyone know about any mobiola replacement/competitor?
